WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CLUB SOCCER
Club soccer in the United States is designed for players who want a more structured, competitive, and development-focused environment than recreational leagues.Unlike rec soccer, club soccer emphasizes consistent training, higher-level competition, and long-term player development. Players are placed on teams based on ability and train with licensed coaches in a more intentional setting.Shelbyville Football Club (SFC) is a member of the Tennessee State Soccer Association (TSSA), which governs league play, rules, and seasonal structure across the state.
How the Club Season Works
Club soccer is not a short-term commitment — it is a year-round development pathway.Primary Seasons:
Fall Season (August–November)
Spring Season (February–May)These are the two main competitive seasons where teams train regularly and play matches against other clubs.Winter (December–February)
SFC hosts the Shelbyville Indoor Youth Winter League to focus on technical development, small-sided play, and keeping players active
Optional but encouraged participationSummer (June–July)
Break from team commitments
- Optional camps, clinics, and individual training
Club soccer requires a higher level of commitment from both players and families.- Training: Minimum of 2 practices per week
- Games: Weekend matches (local and occasional travel)
- Attendance: Consistency is critical for development and team success
- Mindset: Willingness to learn, be coached, and compete
Tryouts & Team Placement
Each year, all players must attend tryouts to be placed on a team.Tryouts are required annually for team placementDates are set and regulated by TSSA to ensure fairness across all clubsTypically held in late May to early June for the upcoming seasonFollowing tryouts, players are offered roster spots based on evaluation.

Understanding Age Groups
U.S. Soccer recently updated how age groups are formed in youth soccer. This change is now followed by leagues and organizations like TSSA, including SFC.What Changed?Age groups are now based on school-year alignment, not strictly calendar year (Jan–Dec) like before. This means players are grouped more closely with the classmates they go to school with.
How Age Groups Work NowInstead of strict birth-year teams, players are grouped into two-year age bands that generally align with grade levels. Here are the 26/27 age group breakdowns:U8 Boys/Girls: Born in July 2018-Aug 2019U9 Boys/Girls: Born in July 2017-Aug 2018U10 Boys/Girls: Born in July 2016-Aug 2017U11 Boys/Girls: Born in July 2015-Aug 2016U12 Boys/Girls: Born in July 2014-Aug 2015U13 Boys/Girls: Born in July 2013-Aug 2014U14 Boys/Girls: Born in July 2012-Aug 2013U15 Boys/Girls: Born in Aug 2011-July 2012U16 Boys/Girls: Born in July 2010-Aug 2011U17 Girls/Boys: Born in July 2009-Aug 2010U18 Girls: Born in Aug 2008-July 2009Exact placement can vary slightly depending on school grade and club discretion. The Director of Coaching along with the Head Coaches of each age group will make the decisions for player placement
What This Means for Your PlayerSome players may move up or down compared to previous yearsTeams may include players from two birth yearsEvaluations are still based on ability, not just ageAt SFC, we place players where they will be:- Challenged appropriately- Confident in their environment- Able to develop long-term

Travel Expectations
Travel is a fundamental part of club soccer. Rather than avoiding it, our approach is intentional—our younger teams will compete closer to home, with travel increasing as players progress through the program.

U8–U10 Teams: Limited to competition within Middle Tennessee.U11–U12 Teams: May include travel to East and West Tennessee, based on team placement and level.U13+ Teams: Travel is aligned with competitive needs. Teams will travel further when necessary to ensure appropriate competition. Participation in the Tennessee State League (TSL), which begins at U13, may require travel throughout Tennessee and surrounding areas.
